My students first work was making bowls... Lots of bowls... Which took a bit longer than what I had planned, but they are for a fundraiser for one of Evanston's soup kitchens - These are going to Beth Emet. I hope you will join us on Nov.13 at 11:30. Five dollars will get you a bowl of soup and the bowl to boot! :-)
Now it's onto the triptychs.... Students learned about hand building, reliefs, subtraction and addition of medium, positive and negative space and more... as they told a story of a defining moment, a superhero or a fairy tale. What you see below, are the beginning stages.... More to come!
Here are the completed triptychs

My triptych shows a single seed growing into a seedling and then into a flower. It depicts the three stages of the growth of a flower. My triptych was inspired by my first memory of planting my first flower with my sister. This memory took place in my front lawn which is why I chose to include clouds and a field of grass. I chose this memory because this was a very defining moment for me. At the time, I was incredibly inspired by the fact that I had created new life, and I wanted to see this symbolic moment in my life molded and built into clay.

The story of my triptych is about me scoring my first goal in soccer. This story happened when I was about 6 years old. It was my first time ever playing soccer before, and I was so nervous. As the game begun the ball was passed to me. I lifted my my leg ready to kick the ball. I whacked it and it soared through the air. When the ball began getting closer and closer to the goal is when I first realized that I loved soccer.

The fairytale story I chose was Cinderella, because when I was little I used to watch it at least once a week. The scene that I chose was the “bibbity bobbity boo” scene. It just seemed to be the most magical, what with the dress, the shoes, and the pumpkin carriage. The story of Cinderella is about a young girl who, after her parents died, was left in the incapable hands of her stepmother and two stepsisters. The name of this girl was Ella, but since her step-family forced her to do all of the chores around the house, she sometimes fell asleep late at night next to the fireplace in the kitchen after working all night and day. When they found her in the mornings, she was always covered in the cinders from the chimney. So of course, it was fitting that Ella’s wicked stepsisters created the very unoriginal nickname of Cinderella. One day, word got out that the king’s son, the prince, was to be wed to the fairest in all the land. They would choose that girl by holding an extravagant ball, every maiden was invited, even Cinderella. Cinderella’s stepmother did everything in her power to stop her from going to that ball, talked about how she had nothing to wear, gave her a giant list of housework before Cinderella could go to the ball. Cinderella made herself a dress using the help from her animal friends and what scraps of clothing and jewelry she could find around the house. When her stepsisters saw what she was wearing they tore it to pieces in jealousy, fearing that Cinderella would be picked instead of one of them. Cinderella didn’t know what to do, she ran into the garden and cried until she couldn’t cry anymore. It was then that her fairy godmother appeared in a waterfall of stardust. She sang her little song and made the magic happen, made Cinderella’s dream come true. Cinderella arrived at the ball adorned in glass slippers and high hopes. The prince saw her across the room and pushed through the crowd in search of his princess. They hit it off from the start, talking and dancing all through the night, but when midnight came Cinderella’s magical night started to fade. She ran down the steps of the palace, leaving nothing behind, besides of course, that enchanted glass slipper. When Cinderella’s stepsisters got home the next morning they could talk of nothing besides the ball, and most importantly, the mystery maiden in the glass slippers. Cinderella was happy to leave at that, a night being the mystery girl, vanishing. The prince wasn’t, he searched the land far and wide looking for his bride-to-be, using only what he knew, a single glass slipper. The prince had grown tired, pessimistic, he remained that way until he came to final house, Cinderella’s house, he marched inside having each member of the household try on the shoe until finally the shoe made a match, to whom other than Cinderella. Their wedding was held in the palace, the magic in their marriage remaining from that first ball. And for the first time in her life, Cinderella was happy, not because she was rich or had nice clothes, but because she finally got her happy ending, all thanks those glass slippers.
